Fresh submarine groundwater discharge offshore Wellington (New Zealand): hydroacoustic characteristics and its influence on seafloor geomorphology

چکیده

Fresh submarine groundwater discharge (FSGD) influences the biogeochemistry of coastal areas and can be a proxy for potential untapped resources offshore freshened (OFG). In most however, onshore-offshore connection recharge characteristics aquifers are poorly constrained, making exploitation this resource challenging. Offshore Wellington (New Zealand), well-defined onshore aquifer system extends beneath harbour, where substantial amounts freshwater seep out from ocean floor. The has been studied in detail recently first attempts worldwide have made here to use as future source drinking water. However, locations extent FSGD well its influence on seafloor morphology still understood. Exact localisation sites is essential sample quantify discharging waters but remains challenging due lack robust appropriate measurement procedures. Novel sensing strategies, such seeping hydroacoustic water column reflectivity could greatly improve identification worldwide. Therefore, we multidisciplinary dataset evaluate different methodologies map spatial determine their geomorphologic expressions Harbour. study, single multibeam hydroacoustics towfish (temperature, salinity turbidity) transects were combined with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives sediment cores better characterise sites. We observed several hundred depressions (pockmarks) that attribute continuous seepage gas seafloor. Different pockmark morphologies indicate fluid flow regimes persistent allows even small pockmarks remain unchanged over time, while anchor scours diminish same region. Enhanced reflections within above suspended particles, which likely kept suspension by density boundaries.

Investigation of submarine groundwater discharge

Coastal hydrogeologists and oceanographers now recognize the potentially significant contribution that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could make to the coastal ocean. SGD may be both volumetrically and chemically important to coastal water and chemical budgets. A worldwide compilation of observed SGD shows that groundwater seepage from the land to the ocean occurs in many environments al...

Nitrogen biogeochemistry of submarine groundwater discharge

To investigate the role of the seepage zone in transport, chemical speciation, and attenuation of nitrogen loads carried by submarine groundwater discharge, we collected nearshore groundwater samples (n 5 328) and examined the distribution and isotopic signature (d15N) of nitrate and ammonium. In addition, we estimated nutrient fluxes from terrestrial and marine groundwater sources. We discuss ...

Eddy correlation measurements of submarine groundwater discharge

This paper presents a new, non-invasive means of quantifying groundwater discharge into marine waters using an eddy correlation approach. The method takes advantage of the fact that, in virtually all aquatic environments, the dominant mode of vertical transport near the sediment–water interface is turbulent mixing. The technique thus relies on measuring simultaneously the fluctuating vertical v...

Groundwater Recharge Interface and Nitrate Discharge: Central Canterbury, New Zealand

Regional surveys of groundwater quality in Central Canterbury, from 1977 to the present, show widespread occurrence of nitrate contamination primarily from agricultural land use. Two reported analyses of these surveys, in 1984 and 2002, describe a general decrease of nitrate concentration with depth from the groundwater table to uncontaminated water at about 50-80 m. This high quality water is ...
